[00:00.00]Professor: I'm going to suggest you rewrite this paper, Ryan.
[00:08.68]Student: That bad huh!
[00:10.26]Professor: Actually, not bad at all. Your paper is very well written, but it has a major problem, one that, we need to talk about.
[00:17.02]Student: okay.
[00:17.80]Professor: The novel you wrote about, “The Wide Sargasso Sea”, you know that’s based on another novel, right?
[00:23.09]Student: Yes, based on “Jane Eyre”.
[00:24.91]Professor: Right, so, why didn’t you discuss “Jane Eyre” in your paper.
[00:29.05]Student: Well, I’ve never read Jane Eyre. But I also think that The Wide Sargasso Sea can stand on its own.
[00:36.46]Professor: I don't think anyone would dispute that. Jean Rhys is a wonderful author, and if you were just reading a book for fun. [00:42.71]But if you want to write an academic paper on this book, well, I don't think you can do that without acknowledging Jane Eyre.
[00:50.40]Student: I'm not sure, I mean, because really, isn't every book that's ever been written influenced by other books, so like, it's difficult to know where to draw the line.
[01:00.43]Professor: But we’re not talking about subtle influences in this case. [01:04.35]The issue here is a very concrete case of one writer basing her book directly on another book. And a very famous one of that.
[01:12.15]Student: But Jean Rhys didn’t just rewrite Jane Eyre, did she?
[01:15.69]Professor: If you'd read Jane Eyre, you know that what Rhys did was in a sense she reinvented it by writing it from the point of view of a secondary character in Jane Eyre. [01:26.26]Antoinette, the main character that you wrote so much about in your paper, she's just a minor character in Jane Eyre. Someone we hear about but hardly ever see. [01:36.40]so, do you think that Rhys would’ve written The Wide Sargasso Sea if Jane Eyre had never been written.
[01:42.34]Student: I don’t know. I mean I saw a lot of parallels between Antoinette and Jean Rhys, they were both born in the West Indies. Then they moved to England as a young woman. [01:51.96]Maybe Rhys would’ve written the similar book anyway.
[01:55.54]Professor: Then why didn’t she just base Antoinette on her own life, Why use character someone else invented. [02:01.69]And isn't there more to this setting and just where the author happens to come from. [02:06.41]Don’t you think there is more to the fact that Jane Eyre takes place in England, but The Wide Sargasso Sea is mostly set in Jamaica.
[02:13.37]Student: It's just that I’ve already works so hard and my schedule was so tight. [02:18.41]Now I wish I schedule a conference with you before I started my paper.
[02:22.33]Professor: Well, I hold those conferences for a reason[02:24.95]Look, what you wrote is good, it's very thoughtful, you make some really original points. And I guess that’s why I’d like to see you taking another step with this. [02:35.01]Right now you get an okay grade, but I think if you just read Jane Eyre, you could write something really special, at least think about it.
[02:43.42]Student: Okay, but reading another book and rewriting a paper. Even if I can find the time and I’m not sure I've got anything creative left to say.
