[00:00.00]NARRATOR: Listen to a conversation between a student and an employee in the university career services center.
[00:07.26]MALE EMPLOYEE: Hi, can I help you?
[00:09.65]FEMALE STUDENT: One of my sociology professors suggested that I come to the career services center and talk to you. [00:14.50]She thought there was going to be a career fair soon, where I could talk to different companies about a possible summer job.
[00:19.90]MALE EMPLOYEE: Well, there's our classroom-to-corporation career fair …. [00:23.07]That's our largest fair every year. [00:25.02]We get representatives from over 100 companies—and they actually conduct interviews right here on campus.
[00:30.81]FEMALE STUDENT: Great, what kinds of companies?
[00:32.73]MALE EMPLOYEE: Uh, this year we'll have representatives from all the major technology companies in the area.
[00:37.74]FEMALE STUDENT: Oh, then I don't know how helpful that’d be … [00:40.03]I’m a sociology major.
[00:41.42]MALE EMPLOYEE: Well, that's fine. [00:42.58]Sociology students often get jobs in marketing, administration, human resources—[00:47.49]tech companies have openings in those areas …
[00:49.93]FEMALE STUDENT: Well, I'm mainly interested in working with people, in human services …
[00:53.95]MALE EMPLOYEE: Well, in that case, we do have a smaller fair coming up, with smaller companies and some public-service organizations—[01:00.13]this one might be a better fit for you.
[01:01.96]FEMALE STUDENT: Yeah, I think that's the one my professor was talking about.
[01:04.85]MALE EMPLOYEE: Most likely. [01:06.25]Now, have you been to a fair like this before?
[01:09.20]FEMALE STUDENT: Not really. But I just show up and talk to different companies, right?[01:12.45] I don’t have to register or anything, do I?
[01:14.64]MALE EMPLOYEE: No, you don’t have to register, but I highly recommend that you come prepared.
[01:19.41]FEMALE STUDENT: Prepared?
[01:20.25]MALE EMPLOYEE: You should dress professionally and have copies of your résumé with you.
[01:24.30]FEMALE STUDENT: Copies of my résumé? [01:25.89]Do I really need that?
[01:27.14]MALE EMPLOYEE: Well, it's not a requirement. But a lot of students come to our career fairs—[01:31.72]plus, we’ve opened up these fairs to the public, to people in the neighboring communities. [01:36.45]So anything you can do to make yourself look more—well, look more professional, [01:41.82]that’s going to set you apart from the other job applicants.
[01:44.75]FEMALE STUDENT: Hmm, I don't even have a résumé. [01:47.08]I’ve never written one before.
[01:48.70]MALE EMPLOYEE: Oh, that's not a problem at all. [01:50.73]Have you been to our new Web site? [01:52.46]It has all sorts of information about how to write a résumé. [01:56.06]And once you've written it, you can make an appointment to bring it in to us at the career services center and have someone look at it with you.
[02:03.10]FEMALE STUDENT: OK, so I really need to have a résumé just to get a summer job?

[02:07.24]MALE EMPLOYEE: Well, that depends on the company, but it's a good idea to have one.
[02:11.27]FEMALE STUDENT: OK, I guess I'll need to have one sooner or later anyway …
[02:14.38]MALE EMPLOYEE: Oh, and we'll be adding other information to our Web site eventually … uh, [02:18.48]like we'll have a list of the companies that're going to be at the career fair by the end of the week. [02:23.11]You should check it out, and then maybe do some research on the companies. [02:27.50]That should help you when you talk to them, too.
