[00:00.00]Narrator: Listen to a conversation between a student and a registrar.
[00:06.44]MALE STUDENT: Hi, I'd like to drop off my graduation form. [00:09.72]I understand you need this in order to process my diploma.
[00:12.80]FEMALE REGISTRAR: OK, I'll take that. [00:14.08]Uh, before you leave, lemme check our computer… [00:17.58]Uh, looks like you’re OK for graduation [trailing off] and…hmmmm. Actually, I'm getting a warning flag on your academic record here.
[00:28.76]MALE STUDENT: Really?
[00:29.49]FEMALE REGISTRAR: Yeah, let's see what's what. [00:32.85]Uh, OK, are you familiar with our graduation requirements?
[00:36.75]MALE STUDENT: Um, I think so.
[00:37.90]FEMALE REGISTRAR: Then you know you need forty-eight credits in your major field to graduate, and at least twenty-four credits at the intermediate level or higher. [00:46.33]Also, after your second year, you have to meet with your department chair to outline a plan for the rest of your time here. [00:53.76]In the past, we also issued letters before a student’s final year began to let them know what they needed to take in their final year to be OK. But we don’t do that anymore…
[01:03.84]MALE STUDENT: I-I definitely met with my chairperson two years ago. [01:07.24]Uh, he told me that I needed eight more courses at the intermediate level or higher in the last two years to be OK…so I’m not sure what the problem is. [01:16.75]I made sure I got those credits.
[01:18.84]FEMALE REGISTRAR: Unfortunately, the computer's usually pretty reliable… [01:22.91]so I’m not sure what’s going on here.
[01:25.52]MALE STUDENT: It could be that I've taken two basic courses but coupled both of them with field experiences.
[01:30.70]FEMALE REGISTRAR: What do you mean?
[01:32.21]MALE STUDENT: Well, I could only take intro courses because there were no intermediate-level courses available for those particular topics. [01:40.16]My chairperson told me that if I did independent field research in addition to the assigned work in each course, they would count as intermediate-level courses. [01:48.93]My classmates, um, well, some of my classmates did this for an easy way to meet the intermediate course requirement. But I did it to get the kind of depth in those topics I was going for. [02:00.24]As it turned out, I really enjoyed the fieldwork. [02:03.12]It was a nice supplement to just sitting and listening to lectures.
[02:05.94]FEMALE REGISTRAR: I'm sure that’s true, but the computer's still showing them as basic-level courses, despite the fieldwork.
[02:12.35]MALE STUDENT: I'm not sure what to do, then. [02:14.59]I mean, should I cancel my graduation party?
[02:17.93]FEMALE REGISTRAR: No! No reason to get worried like that. [02:21.04]Just contact your chairperson immediately, OK? [02:23.96]Uh, tell him to call me as soon as possible so that we can verify your fieldwork arrangement and certify those credits right away. [02:31.72]It’s not like there’s an actual deadline today or anything, [02:34.60]but if more than a few weeks go by, we might have a real problem that would be very difficult to fix in time for you to graduate. [02:41.54]In fact, there probably would be nothing we could do.
[02:44.65]MALE STUDENT: I'll get on that.
