[00:00.00]Narrator:Listen to a conversation between a student and an adviser at a university career center.[00:08.00]Brian:I'm Brian Jefferson. I spoke to you over the phone?[00:14.00]Advisor:Yes, I remember you. So, you brought in your resume, correct?[00:19.10]Brian:Yeah. I've got the basics down on paper. But I just think it needs polishing.[00:24.60]Advisor:Well, we'll look at your resume one-on-one today. Talk about what works, what could be improved. [00:31.20]But I suggest you also attend a resume-writing workshop.[00:35.50] It covers not only your resume, but also writing cover letters to potential employers. [00:42.00]I can reserve a spot for you in an upcoming one if you want. [00:45.80]We have spots open for this Saturday morning actually.[00:49.30]Brian:Uh.. yeah. That would be good. Also, I wanted to ask you. Do you also workshops on job interviews?[00:57.00]Advisor:Definitely. And students tell me they're really helpful. Let's them know what to expect. [01:04.00]It's when students don't know, that they get most worried, you know?[01:08.30]Brian:Okay! I'd like to sign up for both then.[01:11.30]Advisor:Sure. And, hey! What field are you studying?[01:15.10]Brian:Graphic design.[01:17.00]Advisor:And you're graduating when?[01:19.20]Brian:This semester's my last one. I need to start interviewing for jobs right away. I'm a little behind schedule.[01:26.70]Advisor:Okay. Well, just to let you know, we get new job opportunities in all the time. [01:33.40]And, actually, there is a position open for a graphic designer in Ashlington.[01:39.40]Brian:Wow! That's close to here.[01:41.60]Advisor:It's only a short-term opportunity, but if you got the job and were successful at it, sometimes these short-term jobs turn into long-term ones. You never know. [01:53.80]There's also an internship for graphic designers that you could apply for. [01:58.70]They last all summer. It's over in Blue Harbor.[02:02.20]Brian:Is it a paid internship?[02:04.40]Advisor:Yup. The salary's about the same as the position in Ashlington.[02:08.90]Brian:Okay! I shall apply to both then![02:12.10]Advisor:Those are the only two opportunities I know about for graphic designers right now. [02:17.60]But, like I said, we get new announcements in all the time. So you should keep checking back. [02:24.80]We post new opportunities daily on the career center website. [02:29.30]Brian:Oh! I didn't know about that. Okay! I'll check it online every day then.[02:34.90]Advisor:And, well, if you're going to be applying for jobs for graphic design, it's customary to include some samples of your work.[02:44.00]Brian:Yeah. Photographs of pieces from my portfolio?[02:47.90]Advisor:Mm-hmm. And you submit them electronically along with the resume itself. [02:53.50]Most company websites make provision for that. The instructions on how to send the photos, what format and so on.[03:02.30]Brian:Yeah. We covered some of that in one of my classes.[03:06.40] Someone said I should get my work professionally photographed though. But that's really expensive.[03:12.20]Advisor:Well, some people do. But really, the images just need to be clear. [03:18.00]Employers will know that you're a student. If they want to see your art in closer detail, chances are they'll call you in for an interview. [03:27.50]Okay. Now we should take a look at your resume.
