[00:10.92]FEMALE STUDENT: Remember last week you told us that it's really important to get our photography into a show, basically as soon as we can?
[00:17.37]MALE PROFESSOR: Yup, it's a big step, no question.
[00:19.93]FEMALE STUDENT: Thing is, I'm sitting here and I'm just not sure how I’d get there. [00:24.11]I mean, I've got some work I like, but is it really what a gallery is looking for? [00:29.23]How would I know? [00:30.25]How do I make the right contacts to get into a show? I just really don't….
[00:34.24]MALE PROFESSOR: OK, hold on, slow down. [00:36.08]Ah, these are questions that…well, that just about every young artist has to struggle with. [00:42.03]OK, the first thing you should do is: you absolutely have to stay true to your artistic vision...uh, take the pictures you want to take.
[00:52.17]Don't start trying to catch the flavor of the month and be trendy because you think you'll get into a show. That never works, because you wind up creating something you don't really believe in, [01:03.78]that's uninspired, and won't make any shows. [01:07.53]I've seen it happen so many times. [01:10.19]Uh, this doesn't mean that you should go into a cave. [01:13.12]Uh, keep up with trends, even think about how your work might fit in with them, but don't mindlessly follow them.
[01:20.33]FEMALE STUDENT: Well, yeah, I can see that. [01:22.99]I think, though, that I've always been able to stay pretty true to what I want to create, not what others want me to create. [01:29.10]I think that comes through in my work.
[01:30.72]MALE PROFESSOR: OK, just remember that it's one thing to create work that you really want to create when it's in the classroom – [01:37.98]uh, the only thing that's at stake is your grade. [01:40.44]But work created outside the classroom, [01:43.65]that can be a different story. [01:45.56]I’m not talking about technique, or things like that. [01:48.72]It's just that there’s so much more at stake when you're out there making art for a living–uh, [01:53.79]there's a lot of pressure to become something you're not, and people often surrender to that pressure…
[02:00.11]FEMALE STUDENT: But to get stuff exhibited…
[02:01.89]MALE PROFESSOR: Well, you need to be a bit of an opportunist – [02:04.87]y'know, common sense things…like always having a sample of your work on hand to give to people. [02:09.63]You won't believe the kind of contacts and opportunities you can get this way. [02:13.45]And try to get your work seen in places like restaurants, bookstores. [02:18.48]You'd be surprised how word gets around about photography in places like that.
[02:22.49]FEMALE STUDENT: OK. It’s just so hard to think about all of those practical things and make good work, you know?
