[00:01.10]Narrator: Listen to a conversation between a student and an employee at the university art museum.
[00:10.32]Student: Hi, is Mason around?
[00:13.00]Employee: No, sorry he’s gone for the day. [00:15.60]Can I help you with something?
[00:16.99]Student: Well, I hope so. [00:19.10]See, I’m supposed to start volunteering as a tour guide on Monday. [00:23.47]I’m scheduled to give a tour at ten. [00:26.26]I did my first volunteer training session with Mason the other day, and I was supposed to have the second session tomorrow afternoon, which is the last one you guys offer this week, right?
[00:38.83]Employee: Yes, it is. [00:40.13]In fact, it’s the last one we have scheduled for this semester.
[00:43.99]Student: Yeah, that’s what I was afraid of. [00:46.73]So I don’t know what to do because I’m signed up to give that tour on Monday and it turns out I have to make up a test tomorrow afternoon.
[00:56.66]Employee: Well, yes, that is a problem, I’m afraid, because we do require two training sessions before you’re allowed to start giving tours.
[01:05.98]Student: Yeah, I know, I was hoping maybe I could work something out with Mason. [01:11.11]He gave us his home number at the original training session, but I am not sure where I put it. [01:18.31]Could you possibly give it again?
[01:20.52]Employee: Well, no, I am not allowed to give out employees’ phone numbers. [01:25.44]It wouldn’t do you any good, anyway. [01:27.98]Mason can’t waive that training requirement any more than I can. [01:32.54]But I can sign you up for the first session next semester and you could start giving tours then.
[01:38.64]Student: That’s too late. [01:40.22]Not that I wouldn’t want to do tours next semester. [01:43.73]I mean, I do want to keep doing it. [01:46.55]It’s just that, see I really need to start this semester. [01:50.60]My art history professor is giving me a chance to bring my grade up. [01:55.01]He said that I could get extra credit if I wrote a paper for him and volunteered here at the art museum.
[02:02.50]Employee: Is this Professor Tyler’s class?
[02:05.52]Student: Uh-huh.
[02:06.41]Employee: Yeah, I thought so. [02:08.04]You’re not the first student that he’s sent our way. [02:11.35]Look, did he specify that it had to be a tour guide?
[02:15.29]Student: Well, not exactly. I just thought…
[02:18.84]Employee: Because believe me, we could use you in other capacities.
[02:22.68]Student: Really?
[02:23.88]Employee: Well, it’s not as glamorous as being a tour guide, but we always need people to work in the museum gift shop, or how are you with data entry, data processing, stuff like that?
[02:35.83]Student: Pretty good, actually.
[02:37.90]Employee: Because we desperately someone right away to help us keep our membership list up to date, work on our monthly newsletter, things like that. [02:47.35]Sounds kind of boring I know, but after you’ve had some experience, it could lead to a paid position.
[02:54.22]Student: Well, that’d certainly be a plus. [02:56.76]Tell you what? Let me just check with Professor Tyler, make sure it’s alright with him and I will get back to you sometime tomorrow, okay?
[03:06.89]Employee: Okay, great!
