The woman expresses her opinion about the university’s plan. State her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding it.

University to Match Roommates Based on Interests
After many years of matching first-year students with dormitory roommates at random, the university will now try to assign roommates based on similar interests. Before they arrive on campus, all incoming students will fill out a questionnaire about their likes and dislikes and their habits. By matching students with similar interests and habits, the school hopes to improve the experience of first-year students, who will now be more likely to get along well with their roommates. The plan will also reduce work for the housing office because fewer students will ask to switch rooms in the middle of the school year.

Student 1: You know, this makes so much sense! I wonder why it took them so long! Student 2: Oh I don’t think it makes sense! Student 1: Why not? Student 2: Well I don’t think you need to have similar interests to make friends! Look at my roommate and me. we’re completely different. I mean, she’s a French major and I’m studying biochemistry. She’s really into sports and I..(laughs)...well let’s just say I’m not very athletic. Student 1: Yeah, but you guys are good friends. Student 2: Exactly! That’s my point. We get along great! Student 1: I see. But you have to admit, there are a lot of cases where... Student 2: Yeah, I know. Cases where people decide they have to move out. But well, nobody moves out just because they don’t have the same interest as their roommates. Maybe they have very different schedules? Anyway, my point is that there’s no reason to expect a big drop. Student 1: People are still gonna wanna move! Student 2: For all kinds of reasons.

The university is going to match roommates based on students’ interests instead of matching them at random. People who come up with this idea gives two reasons. One reason is they think it will be much easier for students to get along with their roommates. The other reason is they think this method will lead to fewer switching request in the middle of school year. However, the woman doesn’t think it is a good idea. She also gives two reasons. First, she considers that roommates with different interests can still become good friends. Second, she proposes that different schedule can also cause the disharmony between roommates. So she thinks matching students with interests isn’t a good idea.
