[00:00.00]NARRATOR: Listen to a conversation between a student and a computer lab administrator.
[00:05.60]FEMALE STUDENT: Excuse me. Do you know that all the printers over in the student center have stopped working?
[00:10.85]MALE LAB ADMINISTRATOR: There are eight printers connected to the computers there. [00:14.18]You're saying they’re all broken?
[00:16.25]FEMALE STUDENT: Yes, I just came from there. [00:18.57]There's a lot of frustrated students. [00:20.71]So many classes have papers due this afternoon that everyone's trying to print out their stuff at the same time. [00:26.23]Those printers got overworked and now they all have paper jams or some other problem. [00:31.50]Can you fix them?
[00:32.74]MALE LAB ADMINISTRATOR: Well, not really.[00:34.20] I'm just an administrator. [00:36.00]Most of our actual technicians are students who take the job on the side.
[00:39.60]FEMALE STUDENT: Where are they?
[00:40.59]MALE LAB ADMINISTRATOR: Well, most of the students who work at the computer labs study at the engineering school and, uh, unfortunately, they all took the day off. [00:48.33]I think they have some big exams tomorrow.
[00:50.44]FEMALE STUDENT: How can there be no technicians working on the biggest deadline day of the semester?
[00:54.84]MALE LAB ADMINISTRATOR: Well, there's one technician working at the computer lab in the arts building. [00:59.05]Uh, actually he just sent me an e-mail message saying there was a huge crowd there and he couldn't figure out why …
[01:05.21]FEMALE STUDENT: Because people need to print their papers. [01:07.55]There must be something you can do—[01:09.52]people need those printers working.
[01:11.74]MALE LAB ADMINISTRATOR: Well, we just ordered new printers and next month we're replacing the old printers over in the student center with a brand-new set of printers.
[01:19.54]FEMALE STUDENT: But the deadline for submitting papers is just two hours away.
[01:23.29]MALE LAB ADMINISTRATOR: Well, I'm afraid there's nothing I can do. [01:25.80]Uh, your best bet is to probably head to the arts building and get in line there.
[01:30.03]FEMALE STUDENT: But how did this happen again? [01:31.99]Last semester when all the printers broke down, the president of the college got involved. [01:36.66]He sent out an e-mail message to all the students saying that he was going to personally do something to make sure that the situation was resolved.
[01:44.51]MALE LAB ADMINISTRATOR: That's right. [01:45.70]When we had our budget meeting at the beginning of the semester, the president was there. [01:49.53]Uh, that's not something he usually does, but he wanted to make sure we ordered the new printers.
[01:55.04]FEMALE STUDENT: The new printers that are coming next month …
[01:57.46]MALE LAB ADMINISTRATOR: Yeah. I ordered them as soon as the budget was approved. [02:02.00]It's a shame, [02:03.20]but the purchasing process being what it is... Ah, You know what? [02:08.56]It's possible some of the printers are malfunctioning because they ran out of ink. [02:12.97]I’m no technician but if that's what's wrong I could fix it… [02:17.40]I guess I'll grab some ink cartridges and, uh, go over to the student center and check. [02:21.75]No guarantees—sorry—but, ah, it might fix the problem.
