[00:00.00]Narrator: Listen to a conversation between a student and a library employee.[00:06.67]Male Student: Excuse me. I received a letter ... that I'm supposed to return a book that I checked out back in September— uh, it’s called Modern Social Problems— [00:15.75]but I'm writing my senior thesis, so I thought I was allowed to keep the book for the whole academic year.[00:21.18]Female Employee: So you signed up for “Extended Borrowing Privileges?”
[00:24.58]Male Student: Yeah.[00:25.42]Female Employee: And we're still asking you to bring the book back.
[00:27.86]Male Student: Uh huh. Do I really have to?
[00:29.75]Female Employee: Well, let me check the computer. [00:31.66]The title was Modern Social Problems?[00:34.25]Male Student: Yeah.[00:34.93]Female Employee: Uh … it's been recalled. [00:39.42]You can keep it all year as long as no one else requests it. But someone else has … it looks like one of the professors in the sociology department, [00:47.15]so you have to bring it back. [00:49.08]You can check it out again when it’s returned in a couple of weeks.
[00:52.17]Male Student: Well, what if the person renews it? [00:53.84]And I really need it right now.[00:55.72]Female Employee: All of it, [00:56.82]or is there a certain section or chapter you’re working with?[00:59.85]Male Student: Well, there's one chapter in particular I’m working with, but ... why?[01:03.92]Female Employee: Well, we normally don’t do this, but because of the circumstances, we can photocopy up to one chapter of the book for you. [01:11.40]Why don’t you do that for the one you’re working with right now—[01:14.83]and by the time you need the rest of the book, maybe it’ll have been returned.
[01:18.76]Male Student: Oh, well, that would be great.[01:20.54]Female Employee: Do you have it with you?
[01:21.53]Male Student: Uh, no. It's in my dorm room. [01:24.01]These are books I want to check out today. [01:25.94]Um, is it OK if I bring that by in a couple of days?[01:28.84]Female Employee: Uh, actually, the due date is tomorrow—[01:31.30]after that there will be a two dollar per day fine. [01:34.30]But you need to return it today if you want to check out any books today. [01:38.17]That’s our policy.[01:39.53]Male Student: Oh, I see.
[01:40.52]Female Employee: Yeah, not a lot of people realize that. [01:42.69]In fact, every semester we get a few students who’ve had their borrowing privileges suspended completely because they haven’t returned books. [01:49.92]They’re allowed to use books only in the library; [01:53.00]they’re not allowed to check anything out because of unreturned books.
[01:55.98]Male Student: That’s not good. [01:56.87]I guess I should head back down to the dorm right now.[01:59.38]Female Employee: But before you go, what you should do is fill out a form requesting the book back in two weeks. [02:05.13]Then the person who requested it won't be able to renew it, [02:07.71]and you'll get it back quickly.[02:09.12]Male Student: I'll do that right now.
