[00:00.00]Student: Professor, I know you're swamped with grading finals.
[00:08.17]Professor: Yeah, I am.
[00:08.93]Student: But thanks for making the time today.
[00:10.76]Professor: No problem, so what can I help you with?
[00:13.14]Student: Well, actually something has been on my mind lately and I’m a little worried.
[00:17.28]Professor: Really? Your final paper was great.
[00:20.00]Student: That’s a relief. Actually, that's not it, the thing is, I'm not so sure about what I should do after college.
[00:26.79]Professor: This is certainly not the first time I’ve heard that one. [00:30.02]Mostly from students whose major areas of study are directed toward humanities and I'm sure the same goes for many of my colleagues in humanities, as well.
[00:38.71]Student: Yeah. Well, I'm starting my last semester and when I think about graduating, I get a little nervous. [00:44.77]I mean, I’ve always known kind in the back of my mind that it's tough to get a job right out of college with a concentration in English. [00:51.53]I mean, now I just don't see how something like engaging to discussion of 18th century literature would let me put much on any job application.
[01:00.33]Professor: Do you have any special interests other than literature?
[01:03.46]Student: Well, I love to write and computers. They are not just a hobby for me, I really like learning about them. In fact, my friends said I’ve got a real knack for them.
[01:12.80]Professor: Okay, so what about, have you considered technical writing as a career? [01:19.30]You have to be a very effective written communicator to write about, how to use computer software and hardware and you are an excellent writer. [01:28.24]Hmm, look, I'm not saying that you should pursue a career as a technical writer, I just want you to realize that it's not the specific subject matter you’ve learned that the key here. [01:39.08]Think about what your interests are and the skills you've picked up, like the ability to write critically and you read a text and think critically about it. [01:49.54]Just think of your education in terms of skills and knowledge.
[01:53.69]Student: That will make sense.
[01:54.92]Professor: And then of course, there is graduated school.
[01:57.15]Student: Yeah, I've considered it.
[01:58.90]Professor: If you wanted to graduated school and earned your PHD and became a professor, you never have to stop talking about 18th century literature, you even get paid for it.
[02:07.70]Student: I don't know though, I feel like that’s what I should do but my heart really not in it, at least not now.
[02:14.76]Professor: That's fine. In fact, I know several graduated students who came in straight from their undergraduate studies who maybe should have thought about their choice is a bit more carefully before registry. [02:24.51]But anyway yeah, a lot of people don't go to graduate school right after undergrad, many need to have a break, it's normal. [02:30.92]But that of course doesn't rule out a grad-school for good. [02:34.57]But then I will suggest you think about some careers that might interest you, write some of them down and we'll talk about it next week. [02:41.23]See what might be good fit. How you to approach trying to find job in those areas.
