[00:00.00]NARRATOR: Listen to a conversation between a student and the cafeteria manager.[00:04.94]MALE MANAGER: Oh, hi, uh, you're Amy, right?[00:07.65]FEMALE STUDENT: Yes.[00:08.30]MALE MANAGER: I haven't seen you here for a while. Welcome back.[00:11.07]FEMALE STUDENT: Thanks, er, you're right, I haven't been eating here regularly like I used to.[00:15.64]MALE MANAGER: Why not?[00:16.87]FEMALE STUDENT: Couple of reasons. [00:18.54]First of all, I have a class that ends during lunchtime. [00:20.95]So, by the time I get here, there’s hardly any food left.[00:23.91]MALE MANAGER: Really?
[00:24.57]FEMALE STUDENT: Yeah. And then, I have chemistry lab at night this semester. [00:28.46]It's two hours every Tuesday and Thursday. [00:31.17]Y’know, that building's way across campus. [00:33.11]So I just eat something in my dorm before I leave, or skip dinner altogether. [00:37.39]I’d come here afterward, but lab lets out at seven-thirty, [00:40.57]and by then, the cafeteria’s already closed.[00:42.54]MALE MANAGER: Oh, I’m really sorry. [00:44.09]Uh, what about getting something to go and eating it in class?[00:47.29]FEMALE STUDENT: I can't. Food isn't permitted anywhere near the laboratories.[00:50.77] I wish you stayed open later.[00:52.37]MALE MANAGER: Have you complained formally? [00:54.23]We've always had a suggestion box, and now, you can send us an e-mail.
[00:57.75]FEMALE STUDENT: As a matter of fact, I did fill out a suggestion card. [01:01.33]I asked for longer hours and for better food choices, too. [01:04.45]But, that was, like, weeks ago, [01:06.62]and nothing's changed, from what I can see.[01:08.70]MALE MANAGER: Y'know, I was just promoted to cafeteria manager, and one of the things I'm trying to do is pay more attention to students’ concerns. [01:16.30]There have been a lot of complaints similar to yours over the years[01:19.98]FEMALE STUDENT: Yeah, a lot of my friends complain about the cafeteria, but we figure nothing will ever be done.[01:25.43]MALE MANAGER: Well, some things can change. [01:27.61]For instance, you mentioned you'd like better food choices. [01:30.48]Is there anything in particular you'd like added to our menu?[01:33.45]FEMALE STUDENT: I guess it'd be nice to get hot cereal in the morning, and maybe a wider choice of soups and salads at lunch and dinner. [01:43.92]And, there should definitely be enough food to feed everyone whenever the cafeteria’s open.
[01:48.60]MALE MANAGER: Hmmm. All good suggestions. [01:50.98]Say, were you aware that the university has recently formed a food advisory committee? [01:56.40]It includes myself, a nutritionist, the school chef, a food-science professor, and the person who oversees the cafeteria budget.
[02:03.93]FEMALE STUDENT: Do you want me to talk to the committee?[02:06.90]MALE MANAGER: I was thinking you might like to serve on the committee. [02:09.33]If you're interested, I’ll recommend you as the student representative.[02:13.04]FEMALE STUDENT: Ohhhh, I'm not sure if I have enough spare time to get that involved.[02:17.74]MALE MANAGER: OK, then, why don't I let you know when and where our next meeting is, [02:22.44]and we’ll put you on the agenda? [02:24.21]You may also want to send me an e-mail with all of your suggestions. [02:27.51]Now that I'm in charge, I'll make sure they'll get serious consideration.[02:31.18]FEMALE STUDENT: I'd appreciate that. Thanks!
